Academy Barons 0, US Collegiate National Team 10

| July 2, 2016

July 2, 2016 Compton, CA For the second time in three days the Academy Barons took on the US Collegiate National Team in an exhibition game, and for the second time the pitching for the National Team was nearly unhittable, and totally "unscoreable". Just as they were Thursday at Angels Stadium, the Barons, who have been the most productive and consistent hitting team in the CCL this summer, were shutout today by the National Team 10-0 at the MLB Urban Youth Academy. Brendan McKay (Louisville) started on the mound for the National Team and set what would become the tone of the game, pitching three innings without allowing a hit and striking out three. Alex Lange (LSU), Darren McCaughan (Long Beach St), Zach Warren (Tennessee) and David Peterson (Oregon) followed in relief of McKay and matched his dominance, allowing a combined four hits with eight strikeouts. The Barons did manage a bit of a rally against McCaughan in the fifth inning with three consecutive singles by Aaron Cisneros (UC Riverside), Martin Teague (Hope Int) and Trent Hammond (Illinois), but McCaughan struck out two and got a weak grounder to keep the National Team's scoreless inning streak alive. In the last three games and a portion of a fourth, the National Team's pitchers have strung together a 32 inning scoreless streak which, if your rooting for the National Team as it heads overseas for matchups against Chinese-Taipei, Japan and Cuban, that's exactly what you would want. The Barons, however, are looking forward to returning to CCL play, where they are sitting atop the league standings at 12-4, Wednesday against the Orange County Riptide. See the boxscore/recap here.
