June 23, 2017 Fairfield, CA The Rockville Rock Hounds’ three triples, two doubles and a home run were better than the Walnut Creek Crawdads’ two home runs, one triple and a double tonight as Rockville beat the Crawdads 9-6 at Yarborough Stadium. Kevin Sandri (Pacific) hit the first of his two triples in the game to open the scoring for the Rock Hounds, driving home two runs in the second inning and scoring shortly thereafter on a double by Brandt Frazier (Rice), who later scored to give Rockville an early 4-1 lead. Max Smith (UNLV) then tripled to lead off the third inning and scored on a Sandri sacrifice fly to up the lead to 5-1 and, after David Langer (Chabot) hit one of his two solo home runs for Walnut Creek in the fourth inning, Grant St. Martin (Sonoma St) hit his own solo home run in the fifth to give Rockville a four-run lead again. It was a pattern that would continue the rest of the game. John Ballard (Colorado Mesa) hit a two-run double in the sixth inning for Walnut Creek, but Rockville scored once in the bottom of the frame. Langer’s second home run and a second unearned run got the Crawdads to within one after seven innings, but a bases loaded walk to St. Martin and a second, unearned run in the eighth inning provided what would be the winning margin for the Rock Hounds. Click here for recaps of this game Elsewhere in the CCL today: Healdsburg, CA Chase Gardner gave up a leadoff single to Sam Curtis (William Jewell) to start the game for the Healdsburg Prune Packers tonight at Recreation Park, and then promptly retired the next 18 batters he faced to lead the Packers to a 9-2 win over the Auburn Wildcats. Besides Curtis, Gardner allowed only one other Auburn hitter to reach base, on a walk in the second inning, but that runner was erased as part of an inning-ending double play. Gardner finished with six strikeouts, including four in a row to bridge the third and fourth innings, before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Landon Etzel (Houston) got the scoring underway for Healdsburg with an RBI-double in the second. Cameron Warren (Texas Tech) hit a solo home run and Clay Koelzer (Texas Tech) had a two-run double in the third to up the score to 4-0, Sawyer Pittman (San Jose St) hit a two-run home run in the sixth and a pair of doubles by Stephen Kalina and Dane Tofteland (Indiana St) led to three more in the seventh and a 9-0 Healdsburg lead. Auburn scored both their runs in the ninth inning, one on an RBI-single by Nate Verlin (Pacific), which scored Daniel Costello (Oklahoma CC) who had doubled, and a second on a Justin Glover (Eckerd) solo home run. Click here for recaps of this game La Mirada, CA The Orange County Riptide scored 13 unanswered runs, including an eight-spot in the seventh inning, en route to a 14-2 win over the Southern California Catch today at Biola University. Dominik Fletcher (Arkansas) hit a solo home run in the first inning to start the scoring, David Miranda (Florida Atlantic) hit a two-run double and later scored in the fourth inning to up the score to 4-0, and seven Riptide batters recorded hits to generate the eight runs in the seventh, including a two-out, two-run home run by Aaron Greenfield (UNC), a two-run double by Jake Pulcheon (Houston Baptist) and run-scoring singles by Joey Parente and Logan Pouelsen (Hawaii). Miranda, who had a sacrifice fly RBI in the seventh, finished with a game-high three RBI. Six Orange County pitchers combined to limit the Catch hitters to only two hits and a total six baserunners, two of which were retired on the bases, leading to six one-two-three innings and a dominant 31 hitters faced for a nine-inning game. Caleb Kilian (Texas Tech) put in the bulk of the work of the six pitchers, throwing four innings with six strikeouts to earn the win. Click here for recaps of this game San Luis Obispo, CA Mac Lardner (Gonzaga) threw a complete game shutout, facing only four batters over the minimum, to lead the San Luis Obispo Blues to a 3-0 victory over the Conejo Oaks tonight at Sinsheimer Park. Lardner was dominant from the start of the game to the finish, retiring the first 12 batters he faced, 17 of the first 18, 26 of the first 28 and, ultimately, 27 of the total 31 hitters the Oaks managed to bring to the plate. He retired the side in six of the nine innings, recorded nine strikeouts with no walks, and never allowed an Oaks player to reach second base until two outs in the ninth inning when Max Weinstein (Cal Lutheran) singled and was moved up one base on a single by Grant Mayeaux (San Diego St). Offensively for the Blues, Ricky Martinez (Sacramento St) led off the bottom of the first with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fly ball by Drew Judson (Hendrix). It would be the only run Lardner would need. Martinez added a run-scoring single to drive in Myles Emmerson (Cal Poly), who had doubled, to score a second run in the second, and the Blues added an unearned run in the third inning to cap off the scoring. Click here for recaps of this game Santa Barbara, CA The Santa Barbara Foresters relied on a strong pitching performance from Tanner Lawson (St. Edwards) for one win, and a 14-hit offensive performance for a second to sweep a doubleheader against the Long Beach Legends today at Pershing Park. Lawson posted eight strikeouts in seven innings of work in the opener, allowing three hits, one walk and only one unearned run, to lead the Foresters to a 3-1 win. The lone blemish on Lawson’s outing came after the game’s leadoff hitter, Harrison Smith (Oral Roberts), reached base on an error and scored on a triple by Trevor Steinman (Chico St). Steinman was thrown out at the plate on a fielder’s choice in the next at bat, however, and Lawson went on to retire eleven of the next twelve batters he faced, recording at least one strikeout in every inning. Santa Barbara tied the score in the third inning on a two-out double by Austin Todd (Texas) and an RBI-single by Walker Grisanti (Vanderbilt). Brody Weiss (Westmont) doubled and scored on another Grisanti single in the seventh with the go-ahead run, and Chandler Bengtson (Columbia) singled and scored on a sacrifice fly with the final run. In the second game of the doubleheader, Santa Barbara’s leadoff hitter Ryan Cash (Oklahoma St) scored four times, Luke Ritter (Wichita St) drove in three runs and six Foresters hitters had multiple-hit games to lead the Foresters to a 11-3 win and the doubleheader sweep.
