July 9, 2016 Healdsburg, CA After a dismal start to the CCL season the Menlo Park Legends are inching their way up the CCL standings in large part because of their offense which ranks at or near the top of every league category. Today the Legends used that offense in one game and then turned to pitching and defense in the second, highlighted by the two-way talents of Jacob Wilcox (UT Arlington), as they swept a doubleheader from their North Division rival Healdsburg Prune Packers 12-5 and 3-0 at Recreation Park. The wins allowed Menlo Park to leap over the Packers to second place in the North with a 9-8 record to Healdsburg's 9-9. In the first game today both Wilcox and Sean Watkins had three hits and four RBI to lead the Legends offense. Clayton Casey (Houston) also had three hits and scored three times, as did RJ Williams (UT Arlington). Tyler Ivey (Grayson CC) pitched a complete game (seven innings) six-hitter while striking out five to earn the win. Elias Orona (Northridge) had a two-run home run for Healdsburg. In the second game of the doubleheader, Wilcox started on the mound and pitched six shutout innings to pick up the win before handing the ball over to Ryan Lefner (St Louis) who pitched three shutout innings of his own. Vijay Patel (William Jewel) allowed all three Legends runs in his four-plus innings of work and suffered the loss despite striking out seven. See the boxscore/recap here. Also in the CCL today: Long Beach, CA The Southern California Catch and the Long Beach Legends split a doubleheader today at Long Beach City College, Long Beach shutting out the Catch 9-0 in the opener, and the Catch winning the second game 5-2. In the first game, Justin Lewis (Cornell) who will represent the Legends at the CCL All-Star Game Wednesday, pitched a complete game (seven innings) shutout, striking out nine and allowing only three hits and one walk. The offense for Long Beach was top-heavy as the first three hitters in the lineup combined for a seven-for-nine game with five runs scored, leadoff hitter Joe Van Marter's (Houston Baptist) two doubles and two RBI being the highlight. See the boxscore/recap here. In the second game, it was the Catch's leadoff hitter's turn to get hot. Austin Bull (Grand Canyon), himself an All-Star, had a four-for-four game to up his average on the summer to .414, but it was Johnny Weeks' (Hawaii) three-run double in the third that produced the runs for a 5-2 victory. Starting pitcher Jimmy Gallarda (Biola) had five strikeouts in five innings to earn the win. With the split the Catch's record stands at 12-11 and the Legends at 9-15. See the boxscore/recap here. San Luis Obispo, CA The Conejo Oaks hitters racked up 16 hits and their pitchers recorded 12 strikeouts to beat the San Luis Obispo Blues 8-5 tonight at Sinsheimer Park. Chad Spanberger (Arkansas) hit his seventh homer of the summer, added a double and finished with three RBI, and Codi Santana (Hawaii Pacific) had three hits to lead the Oaks. Isaiah Campbell (Arkansas) picked up his fifth win of the summer against zero losses, pitching the first four innings, striking out six, before turning the ball over to Jacob Patterson (Texas Tech) and Tyson Quolas who had five strikeouts while throwing three shutout innings to close out the win. Compton, CA Cody Den Beste (Prairie View A&M) hit two home runs and Aaron Cisnernos (UC Riverside) had three RBI to lead the first place Academy Barons to a 7-0 win over the Orange County Riptide at the MLB Urban Youth Academy. Den Beste, who is one of four Barons hitters elected to the CCL All-Star Team, hit a solo homer to lead off the second inning, and did the same in the eighth, giving him four on the summer. Sebastian Sanchez started on the mound for the Academy and scattered five hits over seven shutout innings before hading the ball over to Josh Bravin (Eastern Michigan) and Ryan Paramo (Stanislaus St) each of whom added one hitless and scoreless inning. The win was the Barons third straight in league and improves their record to 15-5, two and a half games in first. With the loss Orange County falls to 8-15. See the boxscore/recap here.
