July 11, 2019 Compton, CA Trey Lipscomb (Tennessee) had four hits, including a double and a run driven in, Daniel Jung (Notre Dame) doubled and had two RBI, and Ryan Sublette (Texas Tech) faced the minimum three batters in the last two innings, striking out three, to lead the Orange County Riptide to a 4-3 win tonight over the Academy Barons at the MLB Youth Academy. Lipscomb’s fourth hit of the game came in a three-run eighth inning for the Riptide that erased the Barons 3-1 lead. His single drove in Dylan Rock (UT San Antonio), who had led off the inning and reached base safely after being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a double by Andre Antone (UC Irvine). Jung, batting right after Lipscomb in the order, drove in Antone with the tying run and, after a walk to the next batter, Carson Matthews (BYU) hit a run-producing groundout that scored Lipscomb with what proved to be the winning run. Sublette entered the game to pitch for Orange County right after they took the lead and, after allowing a leadoff single to Kendall Ewell (Eastern Kentucky) and after Ewell was caught trying to steal second base, Sublette struck out the next two batters to end the eighth inning and retired the side in order with one more strikeout in the ninth to close out the win. Devin Sutorius (Biola) started on the mound tonight for the Riptide and allowed two runs on four hits, including RBI-doubles by Christian Lucio (Eastern Kentucky) and Ewell, while striking out five over five innings of work. Sean Higgins (Columbia) relieved Sutorius to start the sixth inning and struck out two while retiring the side in order, and Andrew Davis and Tanner King pitched the seventh when Noel Soto (Long Beach CC) drove in the Barons’ third run with an RBI-single. Larry Brabino III (Southern) was the starting pitcher for the Academy and threw four shutout innings, allowing three hits, before turning the pitching duties over to AJ Stinson (Lawson State JC) who threw a scoreless fifth inning, allowed the Riptide’s first run in the sixth when Jung hit a sacrifice fly, pitched a scoreless seventh and was charged with all three Riptide runs in the eighth. Yuji Sakane (East LA JC) relieved Stinson after Jung’s double in the eighth and, after walking the first batter he faced, got the groundout that drove in Lipscomb. Sean Paquet (LMU) came in to relieve Sakane after the Riptide had taken the lead and retired the five batters he faced in order, two by strikeout, to finish the game for the Barons. Click here for recaps of this game Elsewhere around the CCL today: Lincoln, CA Lorenzo Debrecht (Sierra JC) went four-for-four with a solo home run, two RBI and three runs scored, Zach Bushling went three-for-three with a double and an RBI, and Tanner O’Tremba (Texas Tech) hit a two-run home run to lead the Lincoln Potters to a 13-4 win over the Solano Mudcats tonight at McBean Stadium. Debrecht’s home run in the second inning was the first of 15 hits the Potters would collect tonight, including hits by nine different players. The home run tied the score for Lincoln after Solano scored on an error in the top half of the inning. The Mudcats took the lead back in the third inning when Justin Banks (Coppin State) hit an RBI-triple and scored on a sacrifice fly and that lead lasted an inning and a half until Lincoln blew the game open by scoring three times in the fourth inning, four times in the fifth, three times in the sixth when O’Tremba hit his home run, and twice more in the seventh. Jakob Frederick (San Joaquin JC) was the starting pitcher for the Potters who benefitted from the mid-game run support, earning the win with six innings of work in which he allowed three runs on six hits while striking out three. Isaiah Rodriguez (William Jessup) pitched the last three innings in relief of Frederick and allowed four hits and one run when Banks led off the eighth inning with a single and eventually scored on a error with Solano’s fourth run. Brandon Chalk was the starting pitcher for Solano and suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out three over four innings. Click here for recaps of this game Healdsburg Cole Stillwell (Texas Tech) hit a three-run home in the sixth inning that turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead, and Jackson Cunningham (Northridge) stranded the bases loaded for the final two outs in the ninth inning to lead the Healdsburg Prune Packers to a 4-3 win over the San Francisco Seals tonight at Recreation Park. Stillwell’s home run came with two outs in the sixth inning after two batters reached base safely on a walk and a hit batter. It was only the third of four hits of the game for Healdsburg, but the walk and the hit batter that set up the game changing hit were the part of the nine free passes the Packers got in the game. The combination of a hit and a walk paid dividends earlier in the game for both teams. Healdsburg scored their first run when Cam Blake (Texas A&M) singled to leadoff the fourth inning, advanced to second when the next batter walked, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly, and both runners that scored for San Francisco reached via walks, the first scoring in the first inning on a Robert Lujan (Cal St East Bay) single, and Lujan scoring in the fourth on a bases loaded walk. Both early Seals’ runs were surrendered by Packers starting pitcher Morgan White (Portland) who, between Lujan’s hit and Lujan’s walk, retired ten straight San Francisco batters and finished with five strikeouts over five innings of work. Hunter Mayo (Houston) started the sixth inning in relief of White and retired the Seals in order in both the sixth and seventh as Healdsburg took the lead. Cunningham entered the game in the eighth and allowed a leadoff single by Hayden Craig (Southwestern) and an RBI-single by Michael Peter (Central Washington) that got the Seals within one, and then weathered a stressful ninth. San Francisco got their first two batters on base to start the ninth inning on consecutive singles and, after Cunningham struck out one, another batter reached on an error to load the bases. Cunningham induced a groundball that forced the potential tying run out at the plate for the first out and then got another groundball out to close out the win. Drew Stahl started on the mound in this game for San Francisco, allowing one run on one hit over four and a third innings before Justin Culligan relieved him and suffered the loss by allowing Stillwell’s home run. Click here for recaps of this game Pasadena, CA Tevin Tucker (West Virginia) hit a two-run home run, Nick Bellafronto (Stanford) tripled and hit a two-run home run and Zach Presno (Fresno St) hit a solo home to lead the Santa Barbara Foresters to a 12-9 lead over the Arroyo Seco Saints tonight at Jackie Robinson Stadium in a game that was suspended due to light restriction curfew. The three home runs highlighted a 15-hit offensive night for Santa Barbara, one that saw eight of the nine batters in the Foresters lineup collect hits, six of them having multiple-hit games. Still, it wasn’t until the seventh inning when Presno’s home run with one out ignited a six-run rally, did the Foresters have the lead in the game. Arroyo Seco had jumped out front early, scoring four times in their first at bat when Drew Cowley (Cal Poly Pomona) hit a two-run double, Andy Garriola (Old Dominion) drove Cowley in with a double and a sacrifice fly plated another, and, after Tucker’s home run plated two for the Foresters, the Saints scored three more in the third with Garriola and Pete Derkay (Tennessee) each hitting RBI-doubles. The slugfest continued when Ross Cadena (Wichita St) doubled and scored in the fourth inning on a Blake Hall (Oral Roberts) single, when Bellafronto hit his home run in the fifth for Santa Barbara, and when Evan Russell (Tennessee) hit a two-run single for the Saints in the fifth. Santa Barbara added one run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth then plated six in the seventh on five hits, including Cadena’s third hit and second double of the game.
