June 25, 2017 La Mirada, CA The Orange County Riptide scored five runs in their first at bat on a pair of two-run doubles by Beau Phillip (San Joaquin JC) and Connor Beck (Texas Tech) and a sacrifice fly by David Miranda (Florida Atlantic) to spark a 13-6 win over the Southern California Catch today at Biola University. The Catch actually out hit the Riptide today, collecting 14 hits, including a home run and four doubles, to Orange County’s eleven hits, but the Riptide made the most of its opportunities, stranding only four baserunners while the Catch stranded eleven. Three Orange County home runs was the key to keeping the bases clean for the Riptide. Dean Miller (UC Riverside) hit the first, a three-run version in the fifth inning, Joey Parente hit a two-run home run in the eighth and Dominic Fletcher (Arkansas) capped the scoring with a solo shot in the ninth. Steven Garrett (Azusa Pacific) hit the home run for the Catch, a solo shot in the fourth, and Jonathan Ducoff (Houston Baptist) had a pair of doubles to highlight the Southern California performance. Click here for recaps of this game Elsewhere in the CCL today: Santa Barbara, CA Adam Fogel (Hawaii) hit a grand slam and Nick Pagan (Cuesta JC) hit a solo home run to account for all the runs in the San Luis Obispo Blues’ 5-2 win over the Santa Barbara Foresters today at Pershing Park. Fogel’s slam, set up by two singles and a hit batsman came with two outs in third inning and erased the Foresters’ 2-0 lead which was set the inning before by a two-run home run by Chandler Bengston (Cloumbia) . The four-run lead was more than enough for the Blues starting pitcher Austin Dondanville (Cal Poly) who worked seven innings, allowing only the two second inning runs, before turning the ball over to reliever Austin Isenhart (New Mexico) who closed out the game with two innings scoreless. Santa Barbara’s Luke Ritter (Wichita St) and Brody Weiss (Westmont) were the only hitters in the game with more than one hit, two singles and a single and ground rule double respectively. Click here for recaps of this game Healdsburg, CA Dane Tofteland (Indiana St) hit an RBI-double in the first inning and Cole Brodnansky (Santa Rosa JC) followed with a two-run double, and Cameron Warren (Texas Tech) hit his second home run in as many days, a two-run version in the fifth inning, as the Healdsburg Prune Packers completed the sweep of a doubleheader against the Auburn Wildcats with a 6-2 win in the nightcap. The three-run first inning erased Auburn’s early 1-0 lead, courtesy of a solo home run Adam Moreau (Dayton) to lead off the game. The Wildcats didn’t score again until the eighth inning when Daniel Costello (Oklahoma CC) tripled and scored on a Nate Verlin (Pacific) RBI-single, but by then Warren’s homer and a sacrifice fly by Bryce Nagata (Sonoma St) had set the final score at 6-2. Dominic Garihan picked up the win on the mound for Healdsburg, scattering six hits over five innings to allow only one run while striking out five. Justin Giovannoni (Pacific) faced the minimum 18 hitters in his six-inning start today, striking out five and getting help from his defense as the only three batters to reach, two on walk, one on a single, were erased on the bases to lead the Healdsburg Prune Packers to a 10-2 win over the Auburn Wildcats in the first game of a doubleheader today at Recreation Park. Giovannoni got plenty of run support for his stellar pitching performance as the Healdsburg batters scored ten unanswered runs, including two in the first inning on run-scoring singles by Landon Etzel (Houston) and Brodnansky, a solo home run by Tofteland in the third and a three-run home run by Nickolas Oar (Stanford) in the sixth. Both of Auburn’s runs came in the top of the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI-single by Justin Glover (Eckerd) . Click here for recaps of these games Fairfield, CA Carson Haws recorded nine strikeouts in four innings, allowing no runs to start the game and only one hit, and Garlind Webster (ENMU) and Max Smith (UNLV) each had two-run doubles as the Rockville Rock Hounds shutout the Walnut Creek Crawdads 7-0 today at Yarborough Stadium. Even with all of the punchouts, Haws was not without adversity. His four walks, two hit batsmen and the single he allowed put Crawdad runners on base in each of his innings, but when Daws needed it, the strikeouts were there. He struck two in each of the first three innings and then recorded all three outs in the fourth via the strikeout. Relief pitchers Kirby Broadbent (Campbellsville) and Daniel Page continued to hold Walnut Creek down, allowing three hits over the final five innings and each striking out two. The Ballard brothers, John and Joshua (Colorado Mesa) accounted for all four of the hits for Walnut Creek today, all singles. No Rockville starting player had a multiple-hit game, but eight of the nine hitters in the starting lineup got one. Click here for recaps of this game Thousand Oaks, CA Seven pitchers combined for a staff shutout, allowing only four singles, while Jacob Castro (UC Irvine) homered and Grant Mayeaux (San Diego St) had a two-run single to lead the Conejo Oaks to a 5-0 victory over the Long Beach Legends today at Sparky Anderson Field. Jordan McFarland (Arkansas) had an RBI-double, Codi Santana (Hawaii-Pacific) doubled and scored, and Mayeaux, with a single earlier in the game, recording the only multiple-hit game for the Oaks, highlighted the Conejo offense.
